26,000 Johor teens ran away in seven years

JOHOR BARU -- More than 26,000 teenagers, aged between 13 and 18, ran away from home in southern Johor state between 1990 and 1996.

A study by the state Education Department showed that 60 per cent were girls and that nearly 42 per cent were supposed to have been in school.

Department director Rashidi Ramlan said this showed that social-related problems among the youth in the state were serious and he urged parents, as well as family members, to be more responsible for, and caring towards, the youth.

"We want parent-teacher associations to play their roles, especially in encouraging students to be committed in their studies," he said when opening a parental course at a school on Sunday.

He said schools should foster closer relations with parents and make them understand the importance of having good relations with teachers.
