Tay won't seek re-election in Bandar Maharani

MUAR: Bandar Maharani assemblyman Tay Khim Seng, who managed to wrest the constituency from the DAP in 1995, has decided not to seek re-election in the coming general election.

Speaking to the reporters here, he said this was because he had to look after his legal firm following the death of his partner Low Kian Boon in a road accident early this year.

"Besides my profession, I also need to spend more time with my wife and three children, aged between three and eight.

"However, I will continue to serve not only the MCA and Barisan Nasional component parties but also the residents in Bandar Maharani," he said yesterday.

Tay said he had conveyed the matter to party president Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik recently and promised to support whoever the party chose to contest in Bandar Maharani.

He said Dr Ling, who understood his problem, had given his blessings and wanted him to continue to play an active role in the party, including at state and national levels.

Tay, 38, who is the Bakri MCA Youth chief and the Johor MCA Youth vice-chairman, defeated DAP candidate Lim See Wah for the state seat in 1995.

In that elections, Tay garnered 11,234 votes against Lim who managed to poll 8,538 votes. There were 768 spoilt votes.
