MDP wants to silence the 'Rocket'

By Loong Meng Yee

KLANG: The Malaysian Democratic Party (MDP) has urged the Home Ministry to revoke the printing permit for the Rocket, the official organ of the DAP, claiming it had printed false information.

MDP pro tem secretary-general Wee Choo Keong said the party would write to the Home Ministry.

Wee, the former MP for Bukit Bintang, claimed that the DAP had violated the Printing and Publications Act.

"We are also looking into taking legal action against the DAP for criminal defamation," he said yesterday.

The MDP had earlier lodged a police report against the DAP for allegedly publishing an article alleging that the MDP is a "fake opposition party."

Its pro tem Youth chief Tan Siow Eng lodged the report at the Klang police station.

In his report, Tan said the false information appeared in an article entitled "BN's Many Snake Tactics" in the Chinese edition of the Rocket last month.

Tan said this was MDP's second police report. The first was made on July 6 at the Jalan H.S. Lee police station in Kuala Lumpur.

Present yesterday were MDP pro tem deputy chairman Liew Ah Kim, the MP for Seputih, and organising secretary Chua Kow Eng, the state assemblyman for Bandar Klang.

Wee said it was clear the DAP did not practise the freedom and justice principles it claimed to champion.

"They prevented former members from joining other opposition parties and flex their muscles to ensure the MDP does not get to work with the other groups," said Wee.

He also questioned DAP's move to prevent former members from joining other opposition parties when Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) did not protest the acceptance of former member, Fan Yew Teng, into the DAP.
