'Effective governance can improve people's lifestyle'

By Stephen Then and Mergawati Zulfakar

MIRI: Barisan Nasional wants the people to return the ruling coalition with overwhelming majorities at state and federal levels so that it can work effectively towards making life better for all.

Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Barisan component parties wanted consolidated support at both state and national levels so that they could serve the people and improve their living standard.

"We have no other intention but to serve the people. It is so important that Barisan is strong at state and federal levels so that co-operation between the state and Federal Government can be consolidated.

"Ever since the Barisan was given the mandate to rule the nation, it has had no other desire but to serve," he told 30,000 people at a community hall in a housing estate here.

The Prime Minister, who was on an overnight working visit to Miri, said if the people wanted to continue enjoying the steady progress brought by the Barisan Government, they must not be influenced by those out to topple the ruling party.

"The relationship between the state and Federal Government must be solid so that the Federal Government can channel money to the state for proper use."

Dr Mahathir also called on the people to look at the situation in Sabah and learn from it, adding that under the previous opposition government, Sabah lagged in many ways but had progressed steadily since the Barisan took over.

The setting up of the National Economic Action Council was proof that the Barisan Government was sincerely concerned about the rakyat, he said.

He cited the example of the recent one-month campaign by the authorities to allow property developers to sell houses, shops and condominiums at special discounted rates and low interest rates.

"Almost all were sold out and this had enabled a lot of people to own houses.

"When we saw that the sale of cars were not so good, we relaxed the hire-purchase conditions. The council will always take early steps to correct the situation. We want the people to have a good life."

Dr Mahathir also launched the new Permyjaya township consisting of about 3,000 units of low and medium-costs units.

Earlier, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud extended the state's full support for the leadership of Dr Mahathir, saying that the Prime Minister "should not be allowed to resign, let alone be pressured to resign."

Later, Dr Mahathir told a 20,000-crowd at City Stand, a public park in the heart of Miri town, that if the opposition came to power, they would destroy whatever the Barisan had achieved.

He said the opposition did not have the skill or the experience to run a country, adding "the people should vote Barisan into power in the next general election because the Government needs to continue the progress achieved so far."

"Forming a government does not guarantee that it can achieve its objective. Only with an efficient government, can progress be achieved."

Dr Mahathir said the country had 20 years to become a developed nation but it would depend on the stability of the country politically and economically.
