Yang Berhormat,

RE: Making a Commitment to the Women’s Agenda For Change

Salam Sejahtera.

This letter addresses the issue of commitment to the Women’s Agenda For Change, which was launched on 23 May 1999 and has the endorsement and support of 76 nongovernment organisations. This initiative is spearheaded by seven women’s organisations Women’s Development Collective, Sisters in Islam, the Malaysian Trade Union CongressWomen’s Section, Persatuan Sahabat Wanita, Selangor, All Women’s Action Society, Pertubuha Jamaah Islah Malaysia (Wanita), and the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall Women’s Section.

The Women’s Agenda For Change has put forward 11 critical issues of concern pertaining to women. One of its aims is to lobby politicians to support the issues and recommendations in the Women’s Agenda and to incorporate them into their election manifestos. The Agenda will be presented to the government for their support to advocate for policy changes and implementation. It will also be used to raise public awareness.

The Women’s Agenda takes note that over the past two months, politicians and NGOs have made public statements concerning women’s issues, including discussions on women’s participation in employment, in political party’s leadership. There has also been a debate on women as possible candidates in the coming election. We are, indeed, encouraged by such an increase in interest in women’s issues. The discussions and responses have given the women’s issues and recommendations a national perspective. We want to see these verbal commitments translated into actions.

We, therefore, would like to invite Yang Berhormat, as a Member of Parliament, to give your commitment to the Women’s Agenda For Change. A copy of the Women’s Agenda is enclosed with this letter for your perusal. A commitment form is also attached so as to facilitate your correspondence with us. We ask that Yang Berhormat to 1) sign the commitment form; and 2) state specifically the recommendations which you will raise in Parliament, in your constituency and election manifesto. We asked that Yang Berhormat raise these recommendations within 2 months of signing the commitment.

On 30th. August 1999 (Monday), the Women’s Agenda For Change will have a press conference to announce the names of Members of Parliament who have made a commitment to the Women’s Agenda. We hope that Yang Berhormat will be part of this process in enhancing the status of women in Malaysia.

We appreciate if the “Making A Commitment“ form can be returned to us by the latest on 20 August 1999 (Friday). The commitment form can be sent through email or fax as stated above. Please also mail the original commitment form to the above address.

Thank you and we look forward to a positive response.

Yours sincerely,

Maria Chin Abdullah Chairperson Women’s Agenda For Change - Interim Committee
