Win first to change status of A-G, Ibrahim tells DAP

By Nick Leong

BANGI: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Ibrahim Ali said opposition leaders should win the next general election if they wanted to place the Attorney-General's Chambers under the purview of Parliament.

He said the Barisan Nasional Government had no plan of changing the existing setup.

The A-G is currently appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, based on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.

"The present setup has been tried and tested for 42 years since our independence, and it has served the country well.

"If (DAP secretary-general) Lim Kit Siang wants to change it, he should win the next general election first," he said after visiting the site of the new Law and Judicial Training Institute (Ilkap) here yesterday.

Lim, who is also the Dewan Rakyat opposition leader, had said in a politcal gathering in Klang recently that the A-G's Chambers should be placed under the purview of Parliament.

He said the A-G would then be more transparent and independent and could act without fear or favour.

Ibrahim said the independence of the A-G's Chambers was protected by various laws.

"They are serious in their work and independent. No one, not even the Prime Minister, can intervene," he said.

Ibrahim said opposition calls for a revamp of the country's judicial system was "normal."

"That is their role. If they agreed with everything we do, then they will have no work and will be forced to be dissolved," he said.

He said it was strange the calls for a revamp coincided with the sacking of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from the Government.

"They, including the foreign media, have never questioned the integrity of the country's judicial system before," he said.

Commenting on the opposition calls for the repeal of the Internal Security Act (ISA), Ibrahim said the people understood the need for the Act. He said the Government had shown that it was responsible when using the ISA.
