Kit Siang denies DAP not democratic

PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Lim Kit Siang has rebutted charges by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad that opposition parties were not committed to democracy.

"The DAP has always been committed to democracy and history proves that DAP is more democratic than Umno," he said in a statement yesterday.

"The DAP does not take disciplinary action without going through due process, unlike Umno as shown in the case of the sacking of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as deputy president."

On Tuesday, Dr Mahathir said the Barisan Nasional had proven to be far more democratic than opposition parties which had been accusing it of being undemocratic.

He said the DAP was an authoritarian party in which members were not allowed to criticise Lim.
