Indian- based NGOs get a lashing

By A. Letchumanan

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has described Indian-based NGOs who handed a memorandum protesting the dissolution of the South Indian Labour Fund as mere "stooges".

"They (the NGOs) are being used by invisible enemies of MIC who want to hamper the good work of the party," he said.

Samy Vellu was commenting on the argument between Human Resources Minister Datuk Lim Ah Lek on Tuesday and 15 representatives of the NGOs who handed the memorandum to reconsider the decision to dissolve the fund.

"I am not bothered by the noise made by these people who have no vision for the Indian community.

"None of their activities are going to divert our attention. I will see that the Indian community benefits from the fund, the children get the necessary skills, education and better employment," he said, adding that many of them did not understand the concept of the fund.

Samy Vellu said he had been in politics for 41 years and knew how many members each of the NGOs had.

"It is utter rubbish that they represent 400,000 people. The MIC is the only organisation which looks into the social, education, health, housing, land and temple problems. Everything is documented.

"We don't like to make noise but do our work efficiently for the community. We are the ultimate saviours for the community, where everyone comes for help," he said.
