KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (AFP) - The sodomy trial of Malaysia's ousted deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim was postponed Friday as a key prosecution witness underwent medical treatment.
A defence lawyer told AFP that Anwar's former driver Azizan Abu Bakar was still seeking attention after suffering from a migraine and vomiting Tuesday.
A court statement posted outside the Federal Court building where Anwar's trial is being heard stated: "Please be informed that the trial has been postponed to August 16." No reasons were given.
It is the third time the trial has been postponed since Azizan was taken ill after intense questioning by defence lawyers and criticism from the judge.
Judge Arifin Jaka, who on Monday had criticised the evidence given by Azizan, described his intelligence Tuesday as not high.
Azizan in Anwar's previous trial for corruption alleged he was repeatedly forced to have sex with the former deputy premier. But he admitted under cross-examination in that trial that the allegations were false.
Anwar, fired and arrested in September last year, is serving a six-year sentence following his April conviction for corruption which involved abusing his position to cover up accusations of sexual misconduct.
He faces up to 20 years in jail if convicted of sodomy.
Anwar, once heir apparent to Premier Mahathir Mohamad, is jointly charged with his Indonesian-born adopted brother Sukma Darmawan with sodomising Azizan. Sukma faces a further charge of abetting Anwar to sodomise Azizan.
