Ulasan

============================================================================================================================== Help open people's eyes, women editors told

KUALA LUMPUR: The new millennium will pose a challenge for editors on how they can help to "free" orthodox minds and develop rational thoughts, Senator Datuk Zainuddin Maidin said.

He said the people need not be emotional or sentimental, adding that "you can cover your head but don't cover your mind."

"Help open up the people's eyes," said Zainuddin, who is the deputy executive chairman of the Utusan Group, at a dialogue on The Role of Women Editors in the New Millennium.

The dialogue was part of the two-day Women Editors National Conference, organised by the Utusan Group, which ended yesterday.

Group Chief Editor of The Star, Datuk Ng Poh Tip, said women had emerged as a force to be reckoned with but "the paradox is they don't know their strengths."

"Women are coming to the fore if only they know it," she said.

Ng added that women needed to form an important lobby that politicians could not ignore.

"Women have seen their own influence grow simply by flexing their muscles as voters or consumers," she said.

Umno's Merbok division Wanita chief Rosnah Majid said editors should educate the people on the importance of information technology.

Rosnah said IT was an important sector in helping Malaysia compete with other countries.

As such, even those who do not live in towns should not be left out, she said.

Rosnah said many village folk did not buy computers not because they could not afford them.

"It is not their priority. It is a case of poverty of the soul," she said.
