MIC to field another woman

TAIPING: MIC will field a woman candidate for a state seat in the coming general election, said party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

Presently, the party's sole woman representative is MP for Kapar Dr G. Leelavathi.

The party's Barisan Nasional representation consists of 15 state assemblymen and seven MPs.

"Since women represent about 40% of the party membership, they should be given (more) responsibilities," said Samy Vellu after attending a building fund-raising dinner organised by the Taiping Tamilar Sangam group on Friday.

"Now we have only one MP but we can't have more women MPs as the party is only allocated seven parliamentary seats."

He also said the party must change to face challenges in the new millennium and warned that party officials who performed poorly will have to go.
