Documents don't touch on security, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a statement through his wife in which he admits he has kept government documents, but says the papers have nothing to do with national security.

He said the documents were related to incidences of corruption and abuse of power involving Barisan Nasional leaders, according to Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who said her husband only wanted to reveal incidences of corruption in the Government.

"When Anwar was in the Government, he met Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad to inform him of incidences of corruption.

"The authorities should investigate the corruption cases instead of harping on the issue of Anwar creating national security problems," she told a press conference at her house yesterday.

She added that she did not know how Anwar obtained the documents, saying she was not privy to them.

On Thursday, Keadilan Youth chief Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor claimed that Anwar had kept not less than six boxes containing government documents overseas.
