======================================================================================================================================================== Najib: Be grateful to Govt KOTA KINABALU: University students should show their gratitude to the Government for providing them with opportunities to further their studies at minimum cost, Education Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said yesterday. He said the Government was subsidising as much as 95% of local university fees while providing financial assistance to some 82,000 deserving students.
Najib said university students were only required to pay annual fees of between RM1,200 and RM1,400 although the actual cost for a year was between RM14,000 and RM16,000, and RM43,000 for those studying medicine.
"When the Government provides something like this, you should be grateful. But if you bite the hand that helps you, then surely our society will be chaotic," Najib told students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah at a gathering.
On the gap between the performance of bumiputra and non-bumiputra students, Najib said he met vice-chancellors of local universities last week to discuss the matter.
"They told me that our bumiputra students need to change their attitude and generic skills.
"For example they must learn to read a lot of informative books and scientific journals," he said, adding that one of the problems could also be that most of these publications were in English while they were only conversant in Bahasa Malaysia.
At a Jalur Gemilang flag-raising ceremony at the Institut Teknologi Mara here later, Najib advised students to channel their patriotism spirit to gain as much knowledge and skills during their time in college and university.
On another matter, the minister also said study loans were now available for deserving International Medical University students from this year.
"They could apply for loans of up to RM20,000 per year for five years. The study loan is about half of the fees charged by the university," Najib said.
