The China visit will not be something that will decide the voting pattern of Chinese in Malaysia, the Premier says

BEIJING -- Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad said yesterday economics rather than foreign relations would be a decisive factor in winning votes in Malaysia's imminent general election.

He was responding to accusations that he had made the three-day working visit to China, that ended yesterday, in a bid to lobby Chinese Malaysian voters.

"The Chinese community in Malaysia is more interested in the economic well-being of Malaysia than in relations with China. I think that China will not be something that will decide the Chinese voters. But, whether the economy is stable, whether they will do well economically, will decide whether they would vote for the government or not.

"China is not going to be an issue at all, unless someone, of course, thinks up something else," he said in response to detractors.

He made these remarks at a pre-departure press conference here, in which he addressed other issues including the regional financial crisis, the possible devaluation of the Chinese yuan and Sino-Malaysian relations.

He said the China trip had been planned a long time ago to commemorate the 25th anniversary this year of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

"Really, it is nothing to do with the election or anything else," he said, adding that it would be a coincidence if the general election should be held soon after the visit.

"It may well be that we don't hold the election soon. We will take a long time to decide. Everything is possible."

At the press conference, the Prime Minister also announced that both countries had agreed to open new consulates and improve the availability of travel visas.

"We have decided to take steps to increase contacts between Malaysian and Chinese people," he said following meetings with President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji.

The Malaysian Premier, who was in Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East before he arrived in Beijing on Wednesday, left yesterday for Buryatia, also in Russia, for a two-day visit.
