============================================================================================================================== Malaysia not contributing to tension in Spratlys: minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 (AFP) - Malaysia has a right to occupy two reefs in the Spratlys islands and will not be intimidated by Philippines threats to protest to the United Nations, the foreign minister said Tuesday.

"We have not taken any action that will contribute to tension (in the Spratlys)," Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar told reporters.

Syed Hamid also said Malaysia occupied the Peninjau and Siput reefs in the South China Sea because "it is part of our territory."

Malaysia, he said, had responded appropriately to Philippines complaints and "our position remains the same -- we are there for peaceful purposes."

Manila last Thursday lodged a formal protest with Kuala Lumpur after discovering Malaysian structures on a reef in the Spratlys, which is claimed by the Philippines.

Manila in June protested Malaysia's construction of a two-storey structure with a helipad on Investigator Shoal, another disputed outcrop in the Spratlys.

The potentially oil-rich Spratlys in the South China Sea are claimed in whole or in part by Brunei, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Philippine President Joseph Estrada's warned Monday that the Philippines might bring the issue before the United Nations.

The Philippines has previously protested against China's construction on a reef in the Spratlys which is claimed by both countries.
