KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called on the people to fly the Malaysian flag to celebrate National Day.
He said that during this period, everybody should put up the flag everywhere--"on their cars, lorries and outside their homes to make it very bright."
He officially launched the Fly The Jalur Gemilang campaign at Putrajaya yesterday, where all Cabinet ministers stuck flags on their cars after their weekly meeting before driving off.
The campaign was organised by the Information Ministry.
Information Minister Tan Sri Khalil Yaakob admitted that fewer people were flying the flag this year compared to last year. He believed this was due to the economic slowdown.
"Last year, there were many sponsors distributing lots of flags. But this year, there are fewer. It must be because of the economy (downturn)," he said.
He added this did not denote that Malaysians were any less patriotic.
Khalil said people could buy the flags from petrol stations for RM5.50 or directly from the ministry's koperasi for RM2.20.
"So starting from now, those who haven't done so should fly the flags not only on their cars but also at their homes and shops," he said.
