Different PAS manifestos in four states

By Mustafa Kamal Basri

KUALA TERENGGANU: PAS will have separate election manifestos for four states, which among others, will state its intention of forming an Islamic government.

PAS legal adviser Wan Abdul Muttalib Embong who revealed this yesterday, said the manifestos for Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis would pursue one common goal--the formation of Islamic governments in each of the states.

Wan Muttalib said the manifesto for Terengganu was prepared by the state PAS liaison committee and it would be launched when the date of the general election was announced.

He said the manifesto contained 23 main points which touched on the formation of an Islamic state, a judiciary system based on Islam, finance, education, local government, civil service, agriculture, petroleum and gas, housing, women and tourism.

Wan Muttalib said the manifesto also promised to protect the rights of non-Muslims to preach and practise their religion and culture.

He said the manifesto also highlighted PAS' plans to introduce a Syura Rakyat (people's consultation)--a platform for the public to discuss issues relating to government policies and projects.

The public's views would be forwarded to the state government for consideration before it pursued the policies or projects, he said.

Wan Muttalib said PAS wanted to give full opportunities to the people to voice their opinions on government policies and projects before these were implemented.

Other points in the manifesto included the setting up of Badan Hisbah, an ombudsman committee, which would check abuse of power and corrupt practices in the government and its agencies, Wan Muttalib said.

"We are conducting ceramahs and dialogues on the draft manifesto to get feedback from the electorate and leaders of associations and organisations, including non-governmental organisations, before we finalise the manifesto," he told reporters at his office here.

He said the ceramahs and dialogues started on Aug 16.

Wan Muttalib said that to date, some 2,500 copies of the draft manifesto had been distributed during ceramahs.

Meanwhile, Terengganu Parti Keadilan Nasional chairman Abdul Rahman Yusof said his party would endorse and adopt the state PAS manifesto in its campaign in the general election.

"We will use the same manifesto in our campaign to show the spirit of unity and co-operation with PAS towards the common goal of rejecting Barisan Nasional," he said.
