Kelantan managed to reduce debt, says PAS

KOTA BARU: The PAS-led Kelantan government's prudent management practices should be a model of good management for other states, said party elections director Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Abdullah.

He said the state government under Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat had reduced debt accumulated by the previous Barisan Nasional state government despite limited resources.

"When PAS took over the management of the state in 1990, Kelantan owed the Federal Government RM719mil. Today, we only owe the Government RM622mil," he said yesterday.

Wan Rahim said the situation was completely the opposite when Barisan took over the state government in 1978.

"When Barisan took over the state government in 1978, Kelantan owed the Federal Government only RM55mil but when it left, the amount owed increased substantially."

Wan Rahim said Barisan leaders who often chided the state government for presenting deficit budgets should look at budgets presented by the previous state government.

"We have succeeded in covering expenditure with revenue for four consecutive years beginning 1992," he said.
