============================================================================================================================== Malaysian state allows borrowers to pledge on Koran
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (AFP) - A Malaysian state has introduced a system allowing borrowers who cannot find guarantors to pledge on Moslem holy books instead, the Bernama news agency reported Friday.
Applicants for agriculture, livestock and entrepreneurship loans totalling 3.15 million ringgit (830,000 dollars) from the state government need only pledge on the Korean and the Hadith, said Perlis state chief minister Shahidan Kassim.
"Borrowers who do not settle their debts will be committing a sin," he was quoted as saying, adding that borrowers would be bound by their pledge to repay their loan in full according to schedule.
The Koran is believed by Moslems to be the word of God as dictated by the Prophet Mohammad, while the Hadith is a collection of traditions related to the Prophet.
Slightly over half of Malaysia's 22 million population are Moslems.
