Jangan dok heboh-heboh pasal Rukunnegara kalau sendiri tak amal.

============================================================================================================================== Hishammuddin: Rukunegara is our guide

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional Acting Youth leader Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said yesterday that Malaysians must remember that the country overcame many troubles in the past based on the belief and respect for the Constitution and the Rukunegara.

He said Malaysians should take time to ponder the reasons behind the creation of the five principles of the Rukunegara.

"Many of the national socio-economic policies created for the benefit of the people such as the New Economic Policy and Vision 2020 came from the same idea that moved the leaders to visualise the principles of Rukunegara," he said at the round-table discussion on the Independence, organised by the Barisan Nasional Youth.

Hishammuddin said the upheavals faced by the country had changed the mind-set of some people and this had made them forget the sacrifices made to create a free and democratic country.

He urged the people to study and understand the continuing process of the country's development in the wake of the creation of the Rukunegara.

Among those who attended the discussions were former foreign ministers Tan Sri Mohamed Ghazali Shafie and Datuk Dr Rais Yatim, and Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Prof Syed Hussein Al-Attas.

Mohamed Ghazali, who was one of the National Operations Council members who presented the five principles of the Rukunegara in 1970, said the Rukunegara was created to guide Malaysia's vision for the future after the stability of the country was wracked by the racial riots of May 13, 1969.

"The Rukunegara was a shared vision of national unity. We must not take for granted that the stability, peace and harmony is already given to us.

"The Rukunegara should be respected, not tolerated," he added.

Dr Rais said the Government should organise an annual programme to discuss the principles of the Rukunegara.

He said the Rukunegara envisioned the culture of respect for the law and the diverse culture of the various races.

"Its principles should be made a serious subject in schools, in universities and even in political parties,' he added.
