KOTA BARU: PAS is criticising the Kelantan palace out of desperation, said state Umno liaison committee chief Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
He said the party should not have involved the palace in its fight against Umno and the Barisan Nasional.
"I believed they must be desperate to talk about the mentri besar (Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat) fighting the Sultan.
"We are all his (the Kelantan Sultan) subjects and he is apolitical," he said when asked to comment on a report in a Bahasa Malaysia daily yesterday, quoting Nik Aziz's press secretary Wan Ismail Wan Jusoh as saying that Kelantanese are rejecting their sultan.
Wan Ismail was also quoted as saying that the Sultan would lose if he were to contest against Nik Aziz in the coming elections.
Tengku Razaleigh, who is the uncle of the Kelantan Sultan, said he was not offended by the remark because it was uttered by "someone who has lost his mind."
"If they claim to be Islamic leaders, surely they will not utter such remarks," he said, adding that he would leave it to the people to judge Wan Ismail's statement.
Kelantan Barisan information chief Datuk Rozali Isohak said the state Umno liaison committee would issue a statement on the matter soon.
In Malacca, Nik Aziz said that PAS had no quarrel with Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad but was only against his policies.
"We are asking our members to oppose his policies with the aim of advising him to follow the hadis and Quran," he said.
