Umno Youth ready to face general election

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth is all geared up to take on the opposition in the general election, says its acting chief Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

He said he had personally monitored the wing's election machinery in each state and was confident of its effectiveness to swing into action immediately.

"Their tough fighting spirit has been well cultivated and this can be seen from the series of Gerak Gempur programmes they have organised in Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Kelantan and Johor recently.

"The Barisan Youth has also shown equal dedication and commitment to our activities and struggles," Hishammuddin said in a press statement yesterday.

"For instance, Umno Youth will be organising a similar programme in Kubang Sepat, Kedah this Sunday, which would be launched by the Mentri Besar," he said, adding that he would also attend the function.

Hishammuddin added that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had consented to launch another Umno Youth Gerak Gempur programme in Lumut, Perak on Sept 6.

"We will be holding a meeting in Penang to reflect on the inaugural establishment of the Umno Youth wing which was held in the state on Aug 26, 1949 by its first chief Tun Hussein Onn.

"The Deputy Prime Minister has also agreed to attend the meeting," he said.

A Barisan Youth convention would also be held in Sabah on Sept 15.
