Don't incite violence, opposition urged

KANGAR: Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim has urged opposition leaders to retract a statement calling for the shedding of Umno members' blood, as it could incite violence and unrest.

He said the statement was dangerous as it gave opposition party members the idea that those who were not members of the opposition parties, even though they were Muslims, were their enemies.

He said certain members in the opposition parties who were fanatical may easily respond to such exhortations and cause chaos to break out in the country.

"I urge the opposition party leaders to revaluate the situation and withdraw the statement as it threatens peace and stability," he said after chairing the state exco meeting at his office here yesterday.

He was responding to the contents of a leaflet which was distributed during a special prayer session Solat Hajat Kubra bersama Ulama attended by PAS central committee member Datuk Dr Harun Din and PAS MP for Arau Hashim Jasin in Jejawi near here on Aug 27.

A statement which accompanied the Qunut Nazilah prayers in the leaflet said to the effect that the time had come to slaughter Umno members so that they became corpses fit only for dogs to eat.

It urged that Umno members be totally eradicated from the face of the earth as they were not Muslims despite practising the Islamic religion.

It also said the time had arrived that the blood of Umno members were permitted under Islam to be slaughtered and their property seized.

Shahidan said that the members of the opposition parties had never been murdered, hanged or victimised.
