KENYATAAN OLEH DR SYED HUSIN ALI PRESIDEN PARTI RAKYAT MALAYSIA ASEAN MESTI BERTINDAK CEPAT DI TIMUR TIMOR PRM mengutuk pencetusan keganasan di Timor Timur. Kami menyeru semua pemerintah negara-negara ASEAN supaya bertindak serentak dengan cepat untuk berusaha memulihkan keamanan serta stabiliti melalui cara diplomasi dan juga dengan menghantar pasukan keamanan ke Timor Timur, untuk mengawasi proses peralihan kepada kemerdekaan secara aman. Tidak ada gunanya ASEAN terus wujud sekiranya ia tidak boleh melakukan tugas ini pun.
Rakyat Timor Timur telah mengambil keputusan dengan suara terbanyak untuk kemerdekaan. Seluruh dunia harus menghormati keputusan mereka. Sekarang ini jelas bahawa sekumpulan orang yang kecil tetapi kuat, bersikap pro-Indonesia dan berhubung rapat dengan angkatan bersenjata, sedang bertindak liar untuk mengubah keputusan rakyat itu secara kekerasan. Keganasan dan keadaan tidak stabil yang sedang berlaku kini hendaklah jangan digunakan oleh sebarang pemerintahan sebagai alasan untuk menjajah semula Timor Timur.
Oleh kerana itu, PRM ingin merakamkan penentangan yang kuat terhadap langkah Indonesia dan juga Portugal hendak mengirim pasukan bersenjata mereka ke sana. Kami menyeru kepada semua rakyat, pertubuhan dan pemerintahan yang progresif serta cintakan kebebasan dan keamanan di seluruh dunia supaya berusaha mencari penyelesaian yang aman bagi konflik yang dihadapi Timor Timur kini.
STATEMENT BY DR SYED HUSIN ALI PRESIDENT OF PARTI RAKYAT MALAYSIA (PRM) ASEAN MUST ACT SWIFTLY IN EAST TIMOR
PRM condemns the present outbreak of violence in East Timor. We call upon the governments of ASEAN to act swiftly in a concerted effort to bring about peace and stability through diplomatic means and also by sending a joint peace force there, to supervise East Timor's peaceful transition to independence. There is no use to continue having ASEAN if it cannot perform even this function.
The people of East Timor have decided by a strong majority for independence. The whole world must respect their decision. It is clear now that there is a small but strong group of unruly pro-Indonesians associated with the armed forces that are trying to reverse the choice of the Timorese people by force. The present spate of violence and instability should not be used by any government as an excuse to recolonise East Timor.
For this reason, PRM wishes to express strong opposition to the move by both Indonesia and Portugal to send their troops there. We call upon especially progressive and freedom and peace loving peoples, organisations and governments all over the world to work for a peaceful resolution to the present East Timor conflict.
