KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth yesterday slammed Asian Wall Street Journal (AWSJ) for its constant criticism of Malaysia's capital controls and for "shifting goal posts" in its arguments.

Chairman of the international affairs council Abdul Azim Mohd Zabidi said, despite evidence that Malaysia's selective controls had helped "place the economy on the growth path," a Sept 2 AWSJ editorial suggested otherwise.

He said the AWSJ editorial claimed there was a broad consensus among Malaysia watchers that the controls had little to do with the recent growth.

Azim questioned if the AWSJ was suggesting the country's economic recovery was due to external factors such as favourable terms of trade that helped Malaysia rack up surpluses in its merchandise and current account of the balance of payments.

He said this might seem plausible at first sight given that countries like Indonesia, South Korea, and Thailand were also on the road to recovery, without having to impose selective controls, but pointed out that this view gives rise to more questions.

"If all Asian crisis countries recovered because of external factors, does this mean that they need not have resorted to IMF assistance?" Azim said, adding that ASWJ's claim was "totally untenable."
