Election workers get briefing on technical aspects

By Norman Ong

JOHOR BARU: Young party workers from two opposition parties had a better understanding of the technical aspects of a general election after a briefing by the state Election Commission yesterday.

How to prevent votes from being rejected and the various offences which workers can commit on polling day were answered by the commission's director Mohd Yusof Yunos to about 50 Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) and Parti Keadilan Nasional members.

Yusof showed slides of over 20 examples of how votes could be rejected much to the amazement of the audience.

For example, there were voters who added the word "datuk" to the candidate's name while others wrote "setuju" (approved) in boxes where they should have put a cross.

And there were yet others who disfigured the symbols on the voting slips.

"The dos and don'ts on the voting slips are compiled in a booklet and election workers have to explain to voters on the correct way to vote," Yusof said.

State PRM chairman Abdul Razak Ahmad said the briefing was organised by the party.

He said those who attended the briefing would be the election agents who should know aspects of vote counting, make objections and supervise the election centre during polling day.

"About 70% of our workers and those from Keadilan are young, so this briefing will benefit them.

"We hope to continue with our own briefings later on," he added.

Yusof said there were technical aspects that the younger party workers have to know to conduct themselves properly on polling day.

He said there should be no campaigning and even the offer of drink packets inside the area was considered an offence under the Anti-Corruption Act.
