Teachers upset over attacks by politicians

KANGAR (Perlis) -- Teachers are upset that they have become the targets of attacks by over-zealous politicians who accuse them of being anti-government, said a teachers' union.

The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) said the attacks gave the impression that many teachers were involved in anti-government activities when only a small number might be.

"We believe 95 per cent of civil servants in the country, including the 280,000 teachers, support the government," union president Abu Bakar Shawkat Ali said.

Speaking to reporters after the NUTP delegates conference here on Tuesday, he said NUTP, the biggest teachers' union, would investigate every allegation made against the teaching profession.
