Malaysia's Anwar hospitalized after possible poisoning WebPosted Fri Sep 10 18:53:35 1999 KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's former finance minister Anwar Ibrahim, in prison on corruption charges, has been taken to hospital after arsenic was found in his urine.

A pathologist from Australia has certified that there is an excessive level of poison in Anwar's urine.

Anwar, who was sentenced in April to six years in prison, is still on trial facing charges of sodomy. He was taken to National University Hospital after telling the court he wasn't feeling well.

The judge ordered the trial be put off until Anwar is fit to return to court.

Anwar has said the trial is contrived and that Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad made up the charges in a bid to ruin the former finance minister's political career.

The lawyer for the defence says the pathologist's report indicates a dangerously high level of arsenic.

Malaysia's attorney general, who is leading the case against Anwar, said it was a serious matter if he is being poisoned. But Mohtar Abdullah said it was too early to conclude that the former minister was the victim of a government conspiracy.
